Evolution Korea
For a long time, Korea's scientific community has avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so might increase the credibility of the movement. But silence is no anymore an option.
The STR has been battling to remove content from textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process by which individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantages. Over time, this differential reproduction can lead to the emergence of entirely new species.
The word "evolution", which comes from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has changed in both science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.
Recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind the most evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific studies Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial and argue that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high-school textbooks and have also gotten rid of any mention of the evolutionary origins of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur that is thought to be an ancestor of birds.
Why is Evolution important to humanity?

It is crucial to keep in mind that evolutionary biology isn't in conflict with religious beliefs as it only deals with physical objects, events and processes.
Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their convictions. Certain Christians for instance believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have an ancestry that is shared with other animals.
It is important that science educators stand up for the teaching evolution. In some countries, the opposition to evolution has been growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit the teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbooks to include content on the evolution of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is vital to remember that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.
The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. This support is based on a variety of reasons. Certain scientists study evolution in order to discover practical solutions, such as developing medicines and other treatments, while others are driven by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. What is Creationism?

It is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." In this view, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species that are similar to the original.
Others believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were all created simultaneously, and that they developed slowly afterward. They reject the concept of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter.
In general, creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a myriad of professional associations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think of the concept of the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution, too.
STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays a negative view for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of students in biology revealed that half of them did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear however, they could be related to religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists across the United States.
The KACR has achieved many things in the past through seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences that has an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science in major seminaries too. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
